About the Novel

"Even in humanity's darkest moments, kindness, dignity, and hope can still prevail."

It is 1939, and the world is not yet at war. Eight-year-old Olaf — bright, adventurous, and full of wonder — is crossing the North Atlantic with his family when tragedy strikes. Separated from everyone he loves after a passenger ship disaster, he survives alone in a drifting lifeboat before being rescued by the crew of a German U-boat.

Terrified and believing the sailors to be pirates, Olaf slowly discovers that beneath the uniforms of wartime enemies are ordinary men capable of extraordinary compassion. Far away in Portugal, a humble elderly couple — Rosa and José — unknowingly become his guardians during his recovery, their quiet acts of faith and unconditional love helping restore both his body and his spirit.

Back home, his parents struggle with overwhelming grief, while family friends George and Helen care for Olaf's young companion Alice, whose own life has been shattered by the same tragedy. As seemingly unrelated lives begin to intersect across thousands of miles, hope emerges from places no one could have imagined.

Echoes on the Lakefront is a sweeping historical novel about fathers and sons, mothers and children, grief and healing — and the remarkable capacity of ordinary people to become heroes through simple acts of kindness.
